Japan is a vibrant blend of modernity and tradition. In the streets of its cities, women in kimonos—worn for special occasions, celebrations, or even as promotional displays—add a colourful touch to everyday life.

Batik has its origins in South Asia, particularly in Indonesia. It is a traditional textile dyeing technique that involves applying layers of wax to areas that are not to be dyed, protecting them while allowing the exposed areas to absorb color. This process can be repeated as many times as desired, enabling multiple layers of color and creating a rich variety of designs. In 2009, UNESCO recognized batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Each region of Indonesia has its characteristic patterns. By extension, the term “batik” also refers to any fabric printed with traditional motifs and to garments made from it. Today, in addition to the traditional wax-resist method, industrial techniques are used to produce printed fabrics. Batik is widely used across Indonesia and Malaysia, in both everyday clothing (usually cotton) and ceremonial attire (typically silk), as well as in home decoration. It is a living tradition and continues to be an important form of art and cultural expression in Indonesia, Malaysia, and beyond.

In Thailand, Western clothing is most common, while traditional dresses and suits are reserved for special occasions, temple visits, and ceremonies.

The Nepali topi, a popular traditional hat, is an essential part of the country’s national attire. Made from fine cotton fabric imported from Dhaka, Bangladesh, topis often feature distinctive geometric patterns. This scene captures a daily tradition in many Nepali communities: neighbours enjoying conversation and companionship in shared spaces, set against the iconic brick and carved wood architecture of the Kathmandu Valley.

Every morning, this traditional ceremony takes place in the streets of Luang Prabang. The young women respectfully drape the khraam, a cotton scarf with checkered patterns, over their shoulders, creating a graceful and colourful scene.

A special event at the office sees them wearing the ao dai, Vietnam’s traditional dress. Originally a court garment in the 18th century, the ao dai evolved into a modern design influenced by Parisian fashion and became widely popular in the 1950s, combining elegance with cultural heritage.

They wear their distinctive traditional turbans. Different ethnic groups preserve their unique identities through clothing and adornments, keeping cultural traditions alive.

They wear the traditional udeng headdress. Bali is one of more than 10,000 islands that make up Indonesia and the only one where Hinduism is the majority religion in a country that is 90% Muslim. This is reflected not only in clothing but also in many aspects of daily life and customs, making Bali a truly unique place.

Three of them wear the cotton osariya. In Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), South Indian traditions blend with Buddhist customs. This Sinhalese garment is associated with devotion and respect and is typically worn during religious festivals or temple visits. White, the predominant color, symbolizes spiritual purity. Generations come together in this collective ritual, where faith is also expressed through clothing.
